A guide to improved home hygiene

As the nights become brighter and the seasons change, it is time to prepare for that all-important spring clean. Take the opportunity to not only think about your personal hygiene but also the space in which you spend the majority of your time.

Many people overlook the need to deep clean their bedroom regularly, as it is not often associated as a place of contamination. However, when you put into consideration the countless nights of sleeping in the same sheets or those crumbs leftover from last Sunday's breakfast in bed- we can agree that it is time to clean up!

Deep cleaning and your health

The days are gone when a quick wipe down and a few rounds of laundry are enough. Many sleep experts suggest that there are various overlooked elements within our homes that can contribute to higher rates of allergy, allergic rhinitis, and asthma.

The dust that we find at home is usually made up of dead skin cells and hair. This material attracts dust mites, especially in places containing moisture such as beds and other furnishings. The World Health Organisation reports that allergies are the fourth most chronic health condition affecting the global population, such issues are heightened by an increase in mite allergens. If we reduce dust mites, we can reduce respiratory problems.

How to clean a mattress

Beds and mattresses play an essential role in our daily lives. We spend around 8 hours in them each day so it is inevitable that they will eventually collect bacteria and dust.

To manage this, start by washing all bed sheets at least once a week and don't forget to turn over your pillowcase on a regular basis to avoid unwanted germs touching your face as you sleep.

As both our Premium mattress and Ergonomic Plus mattress contain high-quality memory foam, we do not suggest washing your memory foam mattress as the water may affect its performance and composition. However, all of our mattresses come with a removable mattress cover that can be washed at 40 degrees - allowing you to protect yourself and the mattress. Additionally, vacuuming your mattress, around the piping details, in particular, is effective in reducing the chance of an allergic reaction.

Cleaning an upholstered headboard

Another mistake we make is forgetting about the dust that gathers on an upholstered headboard.

A simple way to clean it is to sprinkle baking soda onto a clean cloth, leave it to settle in for a few hours and then remove any remaining powder with a vacuum. This helps to freshen up your bedroom and can also be used as a cleaning hack for curtains or sofas.
