Small bedroom interior design hacks

There are several ways to make a smaller bedroom look brighter and create an illusion of space by putting some thought into the layout, storage options, furniture choice and colour scheme.

1. Stick to a simple layout

A small bedroom isn’t the place to overcomplicate the layout. Place the bed where it naturally fits the best, without blocking easy access in, out and around the bedroom.

With the bed being the largest piece of furniture in a bedroom, a single or a small double bed is usually a must. If you’re worried about comfort, with our single or small double Lea Mattresses you still get the same luxurious comfort and support as with a larger mattress!

2. Keep it clutter-free

Nothing makes a small bedroom look even smaller than overcrowding it with stuff. Have a clear out, keep the floor space as free as possible, and make sure any surfaces are clean and tidy. As for things you can’t live without? Store it out of sight.

3. Bring in the light

Let the light flow in from the window and add plenty of light sources. But keep the lamps off the floor and surfaces. With space already in high demand, mounting light fixtures onto the ceiling or walls makes a big difference.

4. Favour light, neutral colours

To open up the space, opt for lighter colours. It may be best to keep the walls white but add splashes of uplifting colours like yellow or clean, ocean blues with your choice of bedding, paintings, or decorative accessories.

5. Get clever with decorating

Using simple bedroom design hacks when it comes to decorating can create an illusion of space. Draw the focus up by hanging drapery close to the ceiling and purchase curtains that are the same colour as the walls.

Mirrored and reflective surfaces are great for tricking the eye and creating an illusion of continuing space.

Paint is also a brilliant way to bring in a new perspective. Creating borders with different coloured paints can make the walls appear longer.

6. Multifunctional furniture

Getting your furniture to do double duty is a small bedroom lifesaver. For example, with our Vincent bed frame (https://www.leamattress.co.uk/bed-frames/vincent-bed-frame#=7_31) you can use a slim storage cabinet as a headboard behind the bed frame and use the space under the bed for storing items. Storage beds are also fantastic for utilising the biggest piece of furniture in a bedroom.

When choosing a wardrobe, favour ones with sliding doors and make the wardrobe double up as extra storage on top of housing your clothes. No room for a wardrobe? Get a larger bedside table to store clothes in and hang the rest on a bar under a hanging shelf.

7. Elevate the storage

Don’t think all storage needs to cramp up the floor space. Lift it off the floor and hang it on the walls instead! Also, use awkward angles, like those in attic bedrooms, to your advantage by fitting bespoke storage solutions.

8. Make symmetry your friend

Think of harmony, balance and proportion. A perfectly balanced bedroom design scheme will do wonders for a small bedroom.
