Are you in need of a sleep sanctuary?

There is no getting away from it – quality sleep is essential for our health, mood and quality of life. The prequel to a great day is often a great night’s sleep.

But sometimes we count sheep with the best intentions yet still struggle to catch a good night’s sleep.

Perhaps the reason isn’t in you but around you. Does your bedroom remind you more of the things you didn’t have time for in the day than speak of an oasis of calm?

Turning your bedroom into a sleep sanctuary can relax you after a hard day’s work and help you get better sleep.

Here are Lea Mattress’ tips on how to create a calming bedroom environment – a sleep sanctuary of your dreams!

How to turn your bedroom into a sleep sanctuary

1. Colour me sleepy

Think of bedroom colour schemes. Has yours been designed energetic and bright for your waking self, or calm and relaxing for your sleeping self? Although the purpose of a bedroom is sleep, most design their bedrooms with what makes them feel happy and stimulated in the daytime.

However, to create a haven of tranquillity for better sleep, go for neutral colours and cool shades that promote relaxation.

As your bed largely dominates your bedroom, going for more simplistic, yet stylish designs and muted colours can help bring calm. Have a look at our Jules Bed Frame – an elegant yet simplistic centrepiece for your sleep sanctuary.

2. Tidy up time!

Clutter, clothes piled on a chair, paperwork on surfaces, and who-put-that-there items on the floor can steal peaceful sleep by placing unwanted stress on our minds.

Get into the habit of doing a quick tidy around before bedtime. Investing in storage units or having a clear-out can help manage the clutter.

3. Check the temperature

Sleep experts recommend a bedroom temperature of 16-18 degrees – a cooler room helps you sleep more soundly. Naturally, personal preference comes into play, so find the right temperature for you.

The choice of bedding, bedclothes, and type of mattress plays a part in this. A down duvet keeps you warm, whereas natural fabrics like silk and bamboo cool you down. A mattress with air vents or natural materials also helps with trapped heat.

4. Comfortable bedding

Give your pillow, duvet and bed sheets a second thought. Do they make you feel comfortable in bed? Quality bed sheets can make you look forward to diving into bed. Think of the fibres, colours, and texture of bed sheets and choose ones that make you feel like you’re sleeping in a haven of serenity!

Of course, don’t forget a premium bed for supreme comfort!

5. Soothing scents

Various scents, such as lavender, vanilla and lemongrass, help to create a relaxing atmosphere, and hence are ideal when creating a sleep sanctuary.

Essential oils, scented candles or even a body lotion infused with a calming scent can help you relax and fall asleep quicker.

6. A peaceful sound

For most people, noise is the mortal enemy of sleep.

If noise kills your rest, try a sound solution. Sleep headphones, white noise machines and apps, and earplugs can help you block out distracting noises.

If you prefer a more natural solution, the sound of water running can bring feelings of calm. Add a small indoor fountain to your sleep sanctuary and let the sound lull you to sleep.

7. Let there be darkness

If a bedroom bathed in light is your interior design must-have, invest in blackout curtains or sturdy blinds to keep the light at bay at night – especially during the summer.

Darker shades and dim lights promote bedroom cosiness and coax our brains into thinking it is time to sleep. Blue light, however, messes with our circadian rhythm so make it a habit to switch off the electronic devices before bedtime.

8. Think simplicity and comfort

A calming bedroom environment, a true sleep sanctuary, depends largely on what you consider peaceful and comfortable.

Throws, rugs and potted plants can make you feel cosier in your bedroom. It is your personal place so add or take away things that say otherwise. But focus on the essentials to keep your sleep sanctuary free of distractions.
