Is the quality of your bed affecting your dreams?

You may be aware of the old wife tale that chocolate and cheese are forbidden after 8pm if you want to avoid nightmares. However, with nearly a third of the UK’s population suffering from sleepless nights - there are more damaging factors than a little late night snack.

It is suggested that sleep disorders and night traumas can also be linked to the quality of your bed, alongside the comfort and support that you receive from your mattress.

Why do we dream?

Scientists say that everyone experiences at least two hours of dreaming every night, although we don’t often remember them. The dreaming process usually occurs during the REM sleep stage, also known as ‘Rapid Eye Movement’. This is the final stage of sleeping where the brain waves are at their most active stage. If a person is woken up during this stage they are more likely to feel tired for the rest of the day.

The type of dreams or nightmares that we have are normally influenced by external factors such as food, trauma and health conditions. So, if you are a restless sleeper it is important to create a comfortable environment for your mind and body.

Dreams decoded:

Here are some of the most common dreams that people have and what they mean…

1. Falling

A sense of falling is a familiar feeling during people's sleep. This is an example of disturbed dreaming as we are often awoken when the body is jolted in shock. It is unlikely that the dreamer is able to see the bottom as they continuously fall until they return to an awakened state. The meaning can be associated with the need to take control or to let go of something in your life.

2. Being Late

If you are preparing for an event or meeting, the process of falling asleep can be difficult due to stress or anxiety. Nightmares linked to this worry can then happen as we are subconsciously fearing being late for this important date. However, it can also be a metaphorical sign that is never too late to do something that you have always wanted to do.

3. Teeth Falling Out

Teeth are often psychologically linked to confidence. If you are experiencing a bad dream in which you lose your teeth or they start to instantly rot then it can be a sign of uncertainty towards your physical appearance or worries of what other people think of you.

4. Being Naked

It is common for people to dream that they are naked in their dreams, usually in a public place such as school or work. This can often create night traumas as they feel exploited which links to worries that you are being accused unfairly of something in real life. On the other hand, it could possibly mean that you feel confident in yourself or the person that you are with.

5. Meeting a celebrity

Meeting a celebrity can be an enjoyable dream for most. Dream experts suggest that the person that you meet has an importance in your life, whether it be their career type or values. It could be your brain pushing you to follow your dreams and recognising what you really want to do.
