6 Sleeping Positions and Your Personality

1. The Foetal Position

On your side, with your knees curled up – similar to a baby in the womb. With 41% of people adopting this position, this is the most common sleeping position and has many benefits. Sleeping curled up like a ball is great for lower back pain, pregnancy and for reducing snoring. Just remember to ‘keep loose’ to avoid waking up with stiff limbs; a pillow between your legs might help.

Personality: Tough on the outside, soft on the inside. You may be quieter at first but will open up soon enough.

2. The Log

Lying on your side, with your legs extended and your arms straight by your sides. As awkward as it may sound, 15% confess to this sleeping position. Perhaps its popularity has to do with its benefits for keeping your back and neck in alignment. If you choose your left side, you gain the added benefits of better digestion and less chance for heartburn.

Personality: People who have adopted this sleeping position tend to be carefree, friendly and a bit of a laid-backed social butterfly.

3. The Yearner

13% nod off with their arms stretched out in front of them as they lie on their side. As for other side sleepers, a good pillow is essential to avoid neck and back pain in the morning. Consider a pillow between your legs too to help align your hips.

Personality: A Yearner is open-minded yet suspicious of their choices – a bit of a complex character! Once they make up their mind, they stick to it.

4. Soldier

Attention! This sleeping position means lying on your back with arms straight by your sides. Sleeping on your back is said to be one of the best positions for sleep as it can help with back and neck pain. It is also best for warding off wrinkles but may cause snoring. A firm, supportive mattress (see our Premium Mattress) is essential for reaping the benefits!

Personality: Quiet and reserved in character, and usually expect high standards and a strong moral code from others and themselves.

5. Freefaller

Sleepers who lie on their stomach, hugging a pillow with their arms. Although this position is good for helping with snoring and promoting healthy digestion, it places pressure on the neck and back. It also places strain on your muscles and joints, which is why you may wake up tired and achy. A thin pillow or no pillow will help to alleviate the pressure on your back.

Personality: Freefallers tend to be bold, fun and sociable, but lack a thick skin to deal with criticism.

6. Starfish

Classed as the least popular sleeping style (and known for hogging the mattress), 5% of people snooze on their back with their limbs stretched out. Sleeping on your back comes with many benefits: reduced knee and hip pain, and protection for your spine. If you already suffer from a bad back, add a pillow under your knees for optimal spinal alignment.

Personality: A Starfish makes a true friend and a great listener but shuns away from the limelight.

To Best Support Your Sleeping Position, Choose the Right Mattress

Although 5% of people keep changing their sleeping positions, most stick to their favoured position. To sleep better and without back pain, support your sleeping position by choosing the best mattress for you.

Side sleepers: Deep memory foam for comfort with pocket springs for support. Firmness can range from medium-soft to medium-firm.

Front sleepers: A layer of memory foam for comfort with pocket springs for support. Firmness should be medium or medium-firm.

Back sleepers: Opt for a pocket sprung or orthopaedic mattress that is medium-firm to firm.
