As social norms have adjusted in the past couple of weeks, working from home has become the new normal for the majority of the nation. However, everyone’s body clock is different and these new changes can dramatically impact the quality of sleep as well as your mental state.

Luckily, Lea Mattress are by your side to guide you to a better night's sleep during such difficult times.

Staying at home & sleep deprivation

Depending on your daily routine, your usual sleep routine can easily be affected by the temptation of lazy mornings in bed and staying awake until the late hours of the night. This type of behaviour can have a significantly negative impact on your sleep patterns, mental health and productivity.

Sleep experts suggest that there are various healthy, long term, sleep habits that everyone should try to adopt during their daily lives to improve the quality of life.

Sleep before midnight

Firstly, going to sleep before midnight can improve the condition of your sleep due to the effects of daylight and the stages of sleeping. These stages of sleep usually last for a duration of 90 minutes, however they can become unstable if your normal sleeping routine changes. Scientists explain that the REM stage will start to kick in earlier than expected which can result in the feeling of being groggy and tired after a deep sleep.

A simple way to fall asleep earlier is by turning off all devices before you rest your head because reading copious amounts of Covid-19 related news and social media content is harmful for your mental health.

Get 8 hours of sleep

Secondly, try to get the right amount of sleep every night. 8 hours of sleep is the average recommended amount of sleep to maintain a healthy lifestyle and to avoid the damaging effects of sleep deprivation. Read more about the importance of 8 hours of sleep on our previous blog post.

Work from home

Start your day right

Your morning routine and rituals are key influences of being happy at home. Start your morning by feeling natural sunlight on your face, take advantage of not having to travel through the hustle and bustle of early morning traffic by enjoying breakfast in the garden or taking a brisk walk. Taking part in a workout routine, whether it be light or intense exercise, has also proven to improve alertness and productivity and reduce the sense of feeling fatigue.

Home office

Make sure that you assign a dedicated area solely for work purposes. It can be extremely tempting to have a relaxing working day from bed, however, even with the most comfortable bed frame, this can be damaging for your posture and spinal health as most bed frames have not been designed for extensive working hours.

Create a desk area that will be both comfortable and provide enough working space. Placing your desk or table close to a window will prevent you from feeling sleepy. Other ways to keep you awake are; incorporating items in that area which will inspire you such as flowers or photographs.

Last of all, take time to rest - you deserve it!
